Thoroughbred Rescue
Help Us Save an Ex-Racehorse.
They keep telling me that I cannot save them all. I wish it
wasn't true. I wish I could prove them wrong. I am truly not one to admit defeat often, but with
tears in my eyes and sadness in my heart that will be there until my last breath on this Earth I
know that no one can save them all.
So what happens to that beautiful horse that raced his heart out for
his trainer and owner, but unfortunately became too old or lame to continue his career? If it's a
stallion or a mare with a great pedigree it might get a lucky break by going on to a stud farm. What
about the geldings? Or the horses that end up in low level claiming races? The ones that are too
slow or injured? The ones that are no longer an asset to a trainer that needs to make room for a
faster or better horse? A large number of them end up in slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico (now
that the U.S. plants are currently closed), then their meat is shipped to Europe and Asia for human
consumption. Their last days on this Earth are not only filled with fear and confusion, but pain and
suffering. The processing plants in Mexico are inhumane and there are videos available on the
Internet if you want to see first hand.
I am dedicating my life to saving these horses. My family will save
as many as we can... one at a time. This is a personal rescue effort. I do not receive grants
or subsidies.
How You Can Help
We get calls from trainers and individuals weekly. Right now we are
at capacity and cannot take in any new horses at the moment. This is heartbreaking because we
honestly do not have room. We are looking for land to lease in the Lexington area. If you or
someone you know would be willing to offer us use of your land and/or facilities you will be helping
us to save more horses.
We always are in need of feed, hay, bedding, wormers and more.
Below is a list of current products we use:
- Southern States Triple Crown Senior Feed
- Southern States Legends 12
- Rice Bran Pellets
- Corn Oil
- Succeed Digestive Supplement
- Round Hay Bales
- Square Hay Bales (Grass, Alfalfa, Timothy, etc.)
- Wormers
Would you be interested in an "Angel" opportunity? We currently
have an ex-racehorse that we saved from the New Holland Livestock Auction in Pennsylvania named
Destiny by Chance that will be with us for the rest of his life. He will never be sound enough
to be ridden and is a very hard keeper. His monthly expenses are more than any other horse on our
farm but we wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. He is our mascot and is what keeps
me going strong. If you'd like to become an angel for him I will send you photos, videos and
regular updates on him. You can share his plight with your friends and colleagues to spread
the word. (Read the full story of our trip to New Holland, Pennsylvania and the rescue
of Destiny by Chance. *coming Nov. 6, 2007*)
Helping doesn't have to cost you anything. You can volunteer in
many ways. From spending a day with us at the farm to helping us transport horses from
auctions to donating your professional services. There are so many ways to help - and many are
priceless.

Photo of me (Kelly) and Destiny by Chance at the New Holland Auction in
Pennsylvania where many horses are bought by "kill buyers" and then taken to
slaughter. "Chance" is one of 16 horses that were saved by Another Chance 4 Horses
and Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue on August 6, 2007.

This is a photo of Destiny by Chance at his new home at Annalia Farm in
Lexington, Kentucky. He's now a pampered prince with a forever home. He brings me hope and by
one twist of fate has helped me to realize my destiny. My destiny was a chance meeting with the one
horse that changed my life. My life is now about saving Thoroughbred ex-Racehorses. It is more
than a passion, it is who I am and what I feel now defines me. I will spend the rest of my
life to saving as many "Chance's" as I possibly can.
